Suren is a highly experienced endocrine and thyroid surgeon, with expertise in both adult and paediatric surgery. A graduate of Monash University (MBBS, 2000) and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons since 2009, Suren brings over two decades of surgical experience to his practice, with a specific focus on thyroid and parathyroid surgery.
Suren has a specialist interest in benign and malignant thyroid disease, parathyroid surgery, and adrenal conditions, and is a pioneer in minimally invasive thyroid surgery techniques. He was the first surgeon in Melbourne to perform transoral endoscopic thyroid surgery (TOETVA)—an advanced scarless procedure that allows removal of the thyroid gland without a visible neck incision.
He currently serves as Head of Paediatric Endocrine Surgery at Monash Children’s Hospital, and is one of only a few surgeons in Australia with experience and expertise in paediatric endocrine surgery. He holds public appointments with Monash Health and Austin Health, and operates privately at St John of God Berwick, Jessie McPherson Private Hospital, and Warringal Private Hospital.
After completing his surgical training in Melbourne and Perth, Suren undertook two additional years of subspecialist endocrine surgery fellowships at the Austin and Western General Hospitals. His commitment to surgical excellence led him abroad for further training—at Mount Sinai Medical Centre in New York, the National Hospital in Colombo, and in Hanoi, where he trained in transaxillary endoscopic thyroid surgery, another scarless operative technique.
Outside of the operating theatre, Suren is a classically trained flautist and jazz saxophonist, and has performed with the Australian Doctors Orchestra. A lifelong Hawthorn Football Club supporter and devoted follower of the Sri Lankan cricket team, he brings the same passion and precision to music and sport as he does to his surgical practice.
Suren is also deeply committed to global health. He volunteers with projectBEAP, a humanitarian medical charity supporting trauma care infrastructure on Sri Lanka’s east coast—a region deeply affected by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami and civil conflict.
