Patient Journey
What to expect when seeing Suren for thyroid or parathyroid surgery
Understanding what to expect can make your treatment journey less stressful and more empowering.
Whether you're seeking advice for a thyroid nodule, goitre, or parathyroid condition, Suren provides a streamlined, patient-centred experience from first consultation to full recovery.
1. Initial Consultation
Your journey begins with a thorough in-person consultation at Suren’s rooms.
This includes:
Detailed review of your medical history and symptoms
Focused neck examination, including assessment of the thyroid and lymph nodes
Review of any previous blood tests or scans
Discussion of any concerns you may have
If necessary, a neck ultrasound is performed during the appointment. If a thyroid nodule requires further evaluation, Suren may perform a fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy on the spot, using ultrasound guidance—saving time and avoiding the need for a separate imaging referral.
2. Investigations and Planning
Following your initial consultation, Suren will organise any further tests needed to form a precise diagnosis and surgical plan.
This may include:
Blood tests (thyroid function, calcium, parathyroid hormone)
Ultrasound reports or CT scans
Nuclear medicine scans (for parathyroid or nodule localisation)
Molecular testing (if biopsy results are indeterminate)
You’ll receive a clear explanation of all results and treatment options, with the opportunity to ask questions before proceeding to surgery.
4. Post-Operative Recovery
Most patients recover quickly and go home the same day or after one night in hospital.
What to expect:
Mild neck discomfort and swelling for a few days
A follow-up appointment typically 7–10 days post-op
Instructions on wound care, medications, and when to resume activity
If needed, a prescription for thyroid hormone replacement
Ongoing monitoring of thyroid levels or calcium post-surgery
Suren and his team remain available throughout your recovery to ensure you’re supported and healing well. He works closely with some of Melbourne’s leading endocrinologists to ensure the best possible ongoing care.
